Labrador Resource Articles –

The Labrador cheerful temperament and loving demeanor makes it the most popular dog in America. Labs are playful, energetic and extremely loyal. Ironically, their friendly personality makes them pretty lousy at defending your home, but they are excellent at alerting you if there is an intruder. Because of their high energy level, Labrador Retrievers are great for taking on family outings. Plus, they are great for any size family.

The Labrador Retriever – America’s Hero

Labrador Retrievers originated off the coast of Canada on the island of Newfoundland. They were bred to help local fishermen bring in their hauls as well as to be loyal family companions. They are great around water and have a strong athletic body. They are still used today as working dogs (common roles include search and rescue heroes, seeing-eye dogs and canine police officers). Labs are easily trainable although they have a tendency to get overly excited. This is especially so when you’ve been gone all day because they have a tendency towards separation anxiety. The upside is your pup will also be eager to see you.

Labrador Retriever 101 – Get to Know Your Dog

It’s important to make training your Labrador puppy a priority. Luckily, this shouldn’t be hard to do since they are people-pleasers. Note that they have a tendency to “pull” during walks, so train your puppy to walk by your side with a loose leash to avoid getting dragged. Additionally, it’s recommended that you give your Labrador two hours of exercise a day to help control their energy. Many owners take their pets to obedience school to get expert Labrador training tips on how to control their hyperactivity, so you can consider this. Labrador grooming is relatively simple, just a brush once a week to help maintain their thick water-resistant coat (more frequent brushing should take place during shedding) and bath the pup every 4-6 weeks. Nails must also be trimmed.

It’s important to equip yourself with as much knowledge as possible on how to raise your new Lab. Therefore, we’ve pulled the combined knowledge of our Labrador breeders to cover a wide-range of topics, including:

Get Detailed Care Resources from Our Labrador Breeders

A good pet owner is an informed pet owner. This is why it’s important to understand the needs of the breed before you bring a new Labrador Retriever puppy home. Luckily, following these Labrador 101 tips will help you understand the responsibilities of owning a Lab.

Labrador Retriever Health Tips

Exercise is the key to keeping this breed healthy because it stimulates their brain and uses up their excess energy. Even though your puppy will be dewormed before arrival, he/she may need to go through this process at least once more, so find a veterinarian that you trust to take good care of your pooch.

Labrador Retriever Grooming

Although short-haired, Labrador Retrievers require a fair amount of grooming and maintenance. Invest in a good set of natural or nylon bristle brushes. Although weekly brushing is recommended, Labs enjoy daily brushing and it helps their coat stay shiny and clean.

Labrador Retriever Personality

Some have called this breed the happiest dogs on earth! Labradors love attention and they give as much as they receive! Labs also grow deeply loyal to their families because of their pack mentality and easily warm up to strangers too. Labrador FAQ

Labrador Puppy Frequently Asked Question –

Please read our Labrador Puppy FAQ to equip yourself with as much information as possible before you bring a new puppy home. This page was created in along with our Labrador BreedCare and Labrador Breed Info pages to give you a thorough understanding of the unique needs and requirements of the breed.

Question #1 – What is the standard size of a Labrador?

Labradors are medium-sized dogs. Males average about 23.5” in height and weigh between 65-80 pounds. Females are about 22” tall and weigh between 55-70 pounds. They have an athletic build along with a strong, broad head and neck.

Question #2 – Do Labrador require extensive grooming?

Labradors have a thick “double-coat”. The outer layer is water resistant and the inner layer keeps them warm. To keep this thick coat cleaning and shiny, they generally require a thorough brushing at least once a week. However, during their shedding season, it can be considerably more. They require baths about every 4-6 weeks.

Question #3 – Do these dogs shed?

Yes! Despite their short coat, they most definitely shed. However, they only shed their coat twice a year, and once when they leave puppy-hood to become adults.

Question #4 – What is the average lifespan of a Labrador?

A healthy Labrador Retriever usually lives between 10-12 years. They are considered to be adults once they get to age 4 although you will still get a lot of puppy behavior out of them for a long time!

Question #5 – Do they have any special nutritional need?

It’s important for your Labrador Retriever to eat a well-balanced meal to ensure they maintain their playful, active lifestyle. Labradors LOVE to eat and will quickly become obsessive if they are over-fed or given too many treats. For this reason, they have a tendency to gain weight which can be very bad due to their predispositionfor hip-dysplasia. It’s important to monitor your Lab’s diet to ensure he/she maintains a healthy weight.

Question #6 – Do Labradors have a predisposition to any particular health issue?

Hip-dysplasia is the primary health concern for Labrador Retrievers but you can avoid this by monitoring your Lab’s weight. Other less critical concerns include ear infections (due to their long ears) and Swim Tail (which can occur if they spend too much time in the water). Both conditions are usually treated with standard anti-inflammatory meds.

Question #7 – What kind of personality and temperament do Labradors really have?

Labradors live up to their reputation of being one of the sweetest, most loving, active dogs. They have a larger-than-life personality though not overbearing and are extremely affectionate towards people. They are highly intelligent and love playing games. Born water dogs, they love the outdoors and swimming.

Question #8 – Are Labradors good for Kids?

Yes! Labrador Retrievers are great around kids. Despite their large size, they are gentle around children and love to pay around. They are patient and non-aggressive even when taunted.

Question #9 – I live in an apartment, can I still get a Labrador?

Ideally, Labradors should have plenty of space. Their best living environment is a single-family home with access to a yard. However, if you have the time and energy to exercise your Lab outside for multiple hours every day, a large apartment could be a good home.

Question #10 – How much exercise does a Labrador need?

This active dog needs lots of time to play outdoors! Although some experts suggest 30-60 minutes of playtime, ideally they should get at least two hours of exercise a day.
